Dominik Gajarský represents a very contemporary tendency working with the aesthetics of the avant-garde artistic experiment and modernist art theory. His works are characterized by an exceptionally sophisticated visual quality. The Carausius morosus series, exhibited in Prague City Gallery within its cycle in 2016, consists of six parts: a series of five photograms on Baryta paper (Linguistic Joke, String, Sexist Joke, Skewer and Existential Joke) and a video. All these parts feature a picture of a stick insect Carausius morosus, a parthenogenetic female that can reproduce without mating (without being fertilized by a male), endowed with perfect mimicry, which in this sense carries a number of ambivalent meanings. The artwork deals with contemporary issues of the global phenomenon of migration and the related social and cultural conflicts; ethnic, gender and biologically given differences; or, on the contrary, affiliations. Dominik Gajarský is currently one of the finalists for the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize for 2017.
