While it is anchored in the medium of classical photography, Brousil’s works also embody a polemic with the technology of the standard treatment of a photographic image. The head of an African boy (Cabeça do Negro, 1873) by the Portuguese sculptor António Soares dos Reis, is a lively portrait in plaster with its reproduction in bronze, which in the old days used to substitute for the photographic medium. The photographed portrait highlights the individuality of the person depicted. Brousil follows the materiality of the sculpture in various light arrangements and variants.
