computer airbrush on digital canvas, 150 x 100 cm

Surůvka’s Warlords are among the most characteristic works of the 1990s and the first New Media ones in the Czech Republic. Jiří Surůvka became the most prominent representative of the Ostrava regional scene, which began to form at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s as a result of the massive process of postmodern decentralization. In terms of meaning, most of his digital prints from the 1990s are built on two planes: at first sight, there appears a burlesque scene, which upon the closer look is negated by catastrophic scenes of the horrors of war and the Holocaust or contemporary advertising. The series was presented at the 49 Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice in 2001 as part of the joint Czech-and-Slovak project Invitation for a Visit (together with Ilona Németh).
