Demonstration in Space
1968–1969
photograph on paper, 40 x 40 cm

Series of photographs by Jaroslav Franta features various phases of the early action by Hugo Demartini called Demonstration in Space, during which he threw up in the air items with a simple geometric structure: tubes, wooden sticks, rectangles cut out of paper, etc. The photographs capture the seemingly levitating spatial constellations of objects or random compositions created by their fall to the ground. These constellations of accidental fall were later mapped by the artist and transferred to objects made of plaster (series Outside the Delineated Space). This principle of chance, which forms the focal point of the action Demonstration in Space, has been reflected in Demartini’s art in the previous period in the form of chrome-plated objects and reliefs consisting of spheres and hemispheres. One of these objects, Relief of 1965, is also part of the collections of Prague City Gallery.
